On Friday, September 19, 2025, from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., the City of East Orange, the East Orange City Council, the East Orange School District led by Superintendent Dr. Christopher Irving, and members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Eta Pi Chapter will come together to participate in the Fathers Walk, a national event celebrated on September 19 at schools throughout the country.
The annual Fathers Walk highlights the importance of father involvement, mentorship, and community engagement in the lives of young people. Fathers, father figures, and mentors will accompany students as they walk to school, serving as role models while showing visible support for education and community pride.
Research consistently shows that father involvement plays a critical role in the healthy development of children. When fathers are actively engaged, children benefit academically, socially, and emotionally. This engagement fosters stronger bonds between fathers and children, while also creating healthier families and more resilient communities. The Fathers Walk also emphasizes the importance of social-emotional wellness, reminding students that they are supported not only by their families, but by the community-at-large.
Mayor Ted R. Green expressed his commitment to strengthening family and community ties: “Our children thrive when they know they are loved, supported, and surrounded by positive role models. When fathers, mentors, and community leaders show up, we send a powerful message that every child’s future matters and that we are united in helping them succeed.”
Superintendent Dr. Christopher Irving emphasized the importance of this partnership for student success: “Education is not just about academics — it’s about nurturing the whole child. When fathers and mentors are engaged, students gain the confidence and encouragement they need to excel. The upcoming Fathers Walk is a powerful opportunity to show our unity and the collective investment we are making in our young people. I encourage every father, grandfather, and mentor to join us and take those important steps together.”
Matt Stevens, Chairman of the 2nd District Fatherhood and Mentoring Committee, added: “The Fraternity looks to work with cities and schools through the country to promote the increased engagement of fathers in the education of their children. We are proud of the work the Eta Pi Chapter is doing in the City of East Orange.”
The City of East Orange, in partnership with community leaders, continues to affirm its dedication to fostering family engagement, mentorship, and educational excellence as essential elements for a stronger, more vibrant city.
